Around me I can get food grade 55 gallon barrels for around $15, they are very cost effective and can be setup similar to a canister filter, but in reality it is a vertical sump.

It will probably work ok on a 10 gallons tank at full flow, but this filter can be dialed down to just a few gallons an hour if you like and it has a very small footprint.
